Merit Byrne Looby in Libya have been appointed to provide geotechnical services on the new 550km High Speed Railway. Implementation of the project to construct a railway line between Sirt and Benghazi in Libya is being carried out by Russian Railways for Libyan Railways and the contract is worth EUR 2.2 billion. Russian Railways has registered a branch of the company in Libya. The project involves the construction of a modern high-speed (250 kmph) railway line with a gauge of 1435mm along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea connecting the major cities in Libya. In the future, it will become part of an international transport corridor in North Africa. It is planned to build 30 rail and 23 road overpasses, as well as 6 major railway stations and 23 passenger, cargo, freight and operating stations.It is envisaged that in the first phase of the project, diesel engines capable of speeds up to 160 kmph will be used, while in the second, the track will be electrified, allowing the switch to electric engines which can deliver speeds of up to 250 kmph.
